Friske Family

From the moment Oliver was born, he shared an unbreakable bond with his older brother Mason. Growing up just three years apart, the boys were inseparable – partners in play, mischief, and life’s little adventures. But in an instant, their world was turned upside down.

At just three years old, Oliver was diagnosed with T Cell ALL Leukaemia – a rare genetic mutation that had only been recorded in 28 cases worldwide.

“Watching Oliver face something so cruel was unbearable – but even more heartbreaking was watching Mason try to understand why his little brother couldn’t play with him anymore and why hospital rooms replaced playgrounds.”

Watch the Friske Family video below.

Oliver’s treatment journey was long and challenging. His cancer didn’t respond to chemotherapy or immunotherapy in the way they hoped. Cycle after cycle passed, and still no remission. Then, in a moment of profound courage, Mason stepped forward as a perfect genetic match for his little brother. Without hesitation, he offered his cells to save Oliver’s life – a selfless act of love that would change their lives.

The first transplant, while not achieving full remission, yielded an incredible result: 100% of Oliver’s cells belonged to Mason, and his cancer cells began to drop. This miraculous gesture of sibling love gave the family hope and paved the way for a second transplant that ultimately brought Oliver into remission.

Throughout their journey, Ronald McDonald House South Brisbane became more than just a place to stay – it became a sanctuary. The House gave Mason the stability of being close to his brother and the strength they needed to keep going as a family. From the support of volunteers, accommodation, the Meals from the Heart Program, and a sense of normalcy, the Friske’s were able to focus on what truly mattered: being together as a family.

“Thanks to Ronald McDonald House we were held together, supported, and surrounded by kindness – and for that, we will never be able to express how grateful we truly are.”

Today, Oliver is happy and stable – although no longer in remission. The cancer remains a quiet presence and with it comes uncertainty. Yet through it all, the Friske family remain hopeful, knowing that whatever challenges lie ahead, they will continued to be supported and held together by RMHC SEQ.
