When Penny and Eliza graduated high school in 2024, they knew they wanted to keep giving back to the community. Both passionate about helping others, they found the perfect opportunity with Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland. Now, as full-time university students – Penny studying Commerce Law and Eliza pursuing Speech Pathology – they balance their studies with volunteering, proving that making a difference is possible at any age.
What started as a way to continue the spirit of service they embraced at school has now become something that fills their time with purpose and joy.

The pair quickly became regulars in the kitchen, volunteering fortnightly on Monday mornings for baking and morning tea at South Brisbane House. Their shift starts with hairnets and aprons before diving into their favourite recipes – ham and cheese scrolls, cookies, muffins, and even the occasional quiche. Each treat is carefully packaged and displayed for families staying at South Brisbane House to enjoy. Watching every little paper bag get picked up and enjoyed remains one of their favourite moments.
For Penny and Eliza, volunteering isn’t just about baking – it’s about being part of something bigger. Eliza’s mum had always spoken highly of Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland, and that inspired them to give it a try. As university students, they appreciated how flexible volunteering could be and how easy it was to make a difference.
“From the beautiful families to the other volunteers that we have shared the kitchen with, it has been so amazing to see how Ronald McDonald House attracts so many like-minded people.”
Penny and Eliza’s story proves that volunteering isn’t reserved for those with endless free time or years of experience. It’s for anyone with a heart to help. And it’s fun – so much fun that they’ve already convinced a friend to join.
“We couldn’t recommend volunteering for Ronald McDonald House enough! There are so many different roles you can choose from, and the team is very accommodating for busy schedules. There really is something for everyone!”
