Winchester Family

Eleven-year-old Henry from Gracemere in Central Queensland, is a quiet and thoughtful boy with a deep love for military history. Surrounded by a close-knit group of friends and a family who adores him, Henry’s world was turned upside down earlier this year when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer.

What began as a bit of soreness behind his knee around Christmas 2024, soon led to a series of scans and eventually, a diagnosis that no family is ever prepared for. In late January, Henry and his parents were flown to Brisbane, where they were told the devastating news: Henry had bone cancer. The months that followed were filled with uncertainty, fear, and an overwhelming amount of information.

Henry’s treatment plan included intensive chemotherapy and major limb salvage surgery. In May, after two rounds of chemo, he underwent a complex 12-hour operation involving multiple surgical teams. His femur was reconstructed using his own fibula, donor bone, and stainless-steel plates. Since then, Henry has been in a wheelchair, working hard through physiotherapy to regain strength and mobility – all while continuing his chemotherapy.

Throughout this incredibly challenging time, Ronald McDonald House Charities South East Queensland became a lifeline for Henry and his family.

With their lives uprooted and no place to stay in Brisbane, Henry’s parents were introduced to RMHC SEQ. After a short period of uncertainty and motel stays, they were offered a room at the Ronald McDonald South Brisbane House, just across the road from the Queensland Children’s Hospital. It was more than just accommodation – it was a safe, supportive space that allowed them to focus on Henry’s care.

But the support didn’t just stop there. Meals from the Meals from the Heart Program, kind volunteers, and a compassionate team helped ease the daily pressures of hospital life. For Henry’s family these small acts of kindness made a world of difference, especially on the days when energy was low and emotions were high.

Now hopefully nearing the end of his treatment, Henry continues to show incredible resilience. Despite setbacks, including a broken arm during a physio session, he remains determined and hopeful. He and his family are looking forward to returning home soon, with ongoing follow-up care and future surgeries still ahead.

For Henry’s parents, this experience was life changing. The support they received from RMHC SEQ has inspired them to give back in any way they can – through donations, volunteering, and sharing their story to raise awareness.

They encourage anyone who can to support the organisation, a place that offers more than just a bed – it offers comfort, stability, and strength during the most difficult times.

You can help families like Henry’s by making a donation to RMHC SEQ. Every contribution, big or small, helps provide essential accommodation and support programs to families when they need it most. Donate today and make a difference.
