Our mission has always been to keep families at the heart of care during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Through the Heart of our Home Program, families are provided with a home away from home thanks to the generosity of our community and supporters.
ROMAC – Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children, are just one of the supporters who have taken part in this wonderful initiative – ensuring families have a warm, safe place to stay while their child receives life-saving treatment.
For more than 35 years, ROMAC has delivered lifesaving and dignity restoring medical treatment to children from across Oceania – children who otherwise could not access the care they urgently need.
Their impact is extraordinary:
As a project of Rotary Clubs in Australia and New Zealand, ROMAC brings together volunteers, medical specialists and entire communities to change the trajectory of a child’s life and the life of their families.
For many ROMAC families, the journey to healing extends far beyond the hospital. Children often require lengthy treatment far from home, and that’s where we step in.
Across Australia and New Zealand, Ronald McDonald Houses have provided accommodation, comfort and stability for ROMAC patients and their families during some of the toughest times in their lives.
“We all want to make a better world for children. The world works better when we all cooperate.”
When ROMAC’s Northern Region Chair, Wayne Litherland shared with his local Rotary Club in Central Queensland the impact Ronald McDonald House has on families travelling for treatment; the club responded immediately and wholeheartedly.
Heart of our Home room support provides much more than a place to sleep. It gives families:
For ROMAC families, this support is life changing.
“It gives us great pride to see our clubs’ names on many of the doors across South Brisbane House.”
Today, many of those club names proudly appear on doors throughout our South Brisbane House – a lasting symbol of the heart they’ve shared.
Recently, little Maximus and his guardian, Lilina from Timor-Leste stayed at our South Brisbane House while recovery from heart surgery.
As they prepared to return home, Lilina expressed deep gratitude to everyone who supported Maximum throughout his journey. Through Google Translate, she shared that Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland had been a sanctuary for them during an incredibly disruptive and uncertain time.
By joining the Heart of our Home Program, ROMAC and the Rotary Clubs behind them are helping ensure more families can stay together, free from the financial and emotional burdens that come with long-distance medical care.
