Staff, volunteers, supporters, and special guests came together for one of the most meaningful moments on our calendar – the annual Charlie Bell Scholarship ceremony. It was a morning filled with connection and heartfelt reflection as our community gathered to celebrate young people whose educational journey has been shaped by unexpected health challenges.
The scholarship was awarded to 17-year-old Ashton, whose courage and perseverance throughout an incredibly challenging year inspired everyone in the room.
Early in 2025, Ashton’s world was turned upside down when he was admitted to Queensland Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with a juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma – a type of brain tumour. What followed were two surgeries, weeks in hospital, and a lengthy period of rehabilitation.
During this time, his family found a home away from home at Ronald McDonald House South Brisbane, where they could stay close, stay connected, and stay steady during an overwhelming and uncertain period.
But even while facing the kind of challenges most Year 12 students could never imagine, Ashton held tightly to his goals. With the help of teachers from the Queensland Children’s Hospital School, he continued his studies from the rehabilitation ward, determined not to fall behind. Eventually, he returned to school on the Gold Coast and graduated alongside his friends – a milestone he describes as one of his proudest achievements.
“Being able to graduate with my friends meant everything to me. 2025 was a year full of challenges, but staying focused on my goals kept me moving forward.”
Inspired by the occupational therapists who supported him, Ashton plans to pursue a Bachelor of Health followed by a degree in Occupational Therapy – a path driven by gratitude and the desire to help others facing difficult recoveries of their own.
The scholarship Ashton received carries with it an extraordinary legacy.
Charlie Bell was the first Australian to become the global CEO of McDonald’s Corporation, beginning his career as a 15‑year‑old crew member. Known for his drive, generosity, and passion for helping others succeed, Charlie was a long‑time supporter of Ronald McDonald House Australia. His life remains a testament to what can be achieved through determination, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.
In 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer, Charlie Bell passed away. Thanks to the ongoing support of the Bell family, his legacy lives on through the Charlie Bell Scholarship – empowering young Australians whose education has been disrupted by illness or injury.
The scholarship provides a $5,000 grant, helping recipients take meaningful steps towards their tertiary goals, whether that means tuition fees, textbooks, apprenticeship tools, or other essentials to continue their studies.

Bringing together Ashton’s support network and the Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland community, the event highlighted the difference the scholarship can make at a pivotal moment in a young person’s life. Ashton’s story is one of many that continues to honour the Charlie Bell legacy.
