We are thrilled to announce that the refurbishment of our two Family Rooms at the Gold Coast University Hospital is now complete! Both rooms have been thoughtfully refreshed with new carpet, paint, lighting, joinery, furniture, and décor – creating calm, welcoming spaces for families who need them most.
These rooms are more than just spaces, they are sanctuaries for families navigating some of life’s most challenging moments. Designed with care and attention to detail, each room now offers a warm environment where families can rest, reconnect, and recharge.

This transformation wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of our community and the collaboration with the Gold Coast Health Projects Team. Together, we’ve created spaces that reflect the strength of our partnership and our shared commitment to supporting families. We’ve already received overwhelmingly positive feedback from families and hospital partners, and we couldn’t be prouder.
To mark this milestone, volunteers and RMHC staff from across the region travelled to the Gold Coast to celebrate the refurbishment. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to mingle, share stories, and see firsthand the impact these refreshed spaces will have on families.

This room is a true home within the hospital. Designed with earthy brown and orange tones, it features stunning artwork that ties the space together. Families can gather around a large dining table or relax in the lounge area, while little ones enjoy the puzzle corner. There’s even a workspace for parents balancing work and hospital visits. This Family Room also has a kitchen, shower, washing machine and dryer facilities and two overnight rooms, making this space a real hub for families with babies on the Newborn Care Unit.
Soft blue tones pay homage to the previous beach theme, creating a calming atmosphere for families. The space features arched bookshelves filled with toys, books, and games, and a large, carpeted lounge area perfect for play and relaxation. This Family Room also contains a kitchen, shower, and a very highly demanded laundry facilities. This is the only space in the unit where families can make a tea or coffee or simply take a moment to rest while their child is in surgery.
Thanks to a generous grant from the James Frizelle Foundation, we were able to make these upgrades possible. A big shout out to our Facilities team, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring these beautiful spaces to life. In 2024 alone, our Family Rooms supported over 25,000 visitors. Refurbishing these spaces ensures we continue to provide high quality, safe, and supportive environments for families during their hospital journey.
Our Gold Coast Family Rooms are run by a dedicated group of volunteers who make these spaces feel like home. If you’d like to learn more about volunteering, click here.
