Applications open for RMHC Charlie Bell Scholarship

At Ronald McDonald House Charities South East Queensland (RMHC SEQ), we believe every young person deserves the chance to chase their dreams – especially those who have faced the challenges of illness or injury.

That’s why we’re proud to once again open applications for the RMHC Charlie Bell Scholarship, an annual program designed to support young people as they take the next step in their education or career journey.

Charlie Bell made history as the first Australian to serve as Global CEO of McDonald’s. Following his courageous battle with cancer, Charlie’s legacy continues through this scholarship, which provides meaningful support to those whose lives have been impacted by illness or injury – helping them move forward with confidence and pursue their aspirations.

What is the Charlie Bell Scholarship?

Each year, the scholarship awards $5,000 grants to young people aged 15-20 who have had their education disrupted due to medical challenges and are now preparing to pursue university, TAFE, or vocational studies in 2026.

The funds can be used towards university fees, apprenticeship tools, course supplies, or anything that helps remove barriers to success.

In 2024, we received our highest number of applications to date – with 28 inspiring young people sharing their stories and aspirations. This year, we hope to surpass that record and connect with even more incredible applicants.

Last year, one of our recipients, Ella Schwarz, shared how living with stage 4 endometriosis means enduring relentless, debilitating pain. Despite these challenges, Ella continued to excel in school and accepted an early offer for a Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology) /  Bachelor of Justice at the Queensland University of Technology.

“My personal journey has taught me the importance of resilience and the value of giving back to the community, inspiring me to make a positive difference. Thanks to RMHC SEQ, the Charlie Bell Scholarship has given me the opportunity to turn my experiences into strengths, as I work toward achieving my aspirations.”

Applications for the 2025 RMHC Charlie Bell Scholarship are now open and will close on 30 November 2025. Applicants do not need to have stayed at Ronald McDonald House to apply.
