At Ronald McDonald House Charities South East Queensland (RMHC SEQ), our Family Rooms offer a quite haven right within the hospital walls – a place where families can take a break from the beeping machines and emotional stress of the wards, even if just for a moment. These spaces only exist because of the dedication of volunteers like Suze-Anne.
Suze-Anne first joined our Gold Coast University Hospital Family Room volunteer team in November 2024. For her, this is more than a volunteer shift – it’s her way of giving back to a charity that once supported her.
“I had my own experience with RMHC many years ago and I promised myself that when I had the opportunity, I’d love to volunteer. This is my payback.”
In her role, Suze-Anne helps keep the Family Room running smoothly and feeling like a home. She ensures the space is clean, the cupboards are well-stocked, and that families are warmly welcomed. Suze-Anne says she simply enjoys being there and knowing her time counts – that in her own small way, she’s able to make a difference and offer support when it’s needed most.
When she’s not volunteering, Suze-Anne works full-time as a teacher aid at a local primary school and keeps busy with crafting, social walks and charity events. Sue is also a proud mum of three grown children who she enjoys catching up with regularly.
There is an urgent need for volunteers at our Gold Coast University Hospital Family Rooms. Without volunteers, the room simply cannot open – meaning families miss out on a vital space during some of the most stressful moments of their lives. Having someone there to greet families, offer a cup of tea, or keep the space running makes a world of difference – especially for parents who are just steps away from their child’s bedside.
Along with many of our volunteers, Suze-Anne encourages anyone who is thinking about volunteering to give it a go.
“Be proud of what you’re doing. There are opportunities for personal growth if you choose, but more than anything, your time – however small – is so gratefully accepted.”
At RMHC SEQ, our Family Rooms are located inside the Gold Coast University Hospital and Queensland Children’s Hospital. These warm, welcoming spaces provide families with a place to rest, reconnect, and take a break from the clinical environment. Open and free to all families with children receiving treatment nearby, our Family Rooms offer comfort and support when it’s needed most.
